Ways to Help Winterize your Home and Save on Heat for the Cold Months

Blog Post

Owning a home costs money, especially in the winter months when your furnace is running to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. We have some suggestions for homeowners for ways to cut down that heating bill and keep some money in your pocket.

1. Your furnace or heat source is like your car- it needs to be serviced and maintained to ensure it is functioning at its full capability. Annually service on your furnace alone can reduce your overall heat costs by 5%. A service includes: ensuring the unit is clean, greased and running properly. As the homeowner, also be sure to change your furnace filter regularly. We recommend changing your filter more often if you have pets in your home. When your filter is clean, your fan motor works more efficiently If the filter is clogged it can cause the fan to stop altogether.

2. Take a good look at the windows and doors in your home - they may need to be replaced to have a more efficient seal. Be sure to look into possible grants that are often provided to homeowners for upgrading these products.

3. We all know that heat rises, so it’s also important to check your attic. Be sure that your home is insulated properly to ensure you are not losing a lot of heat through your walls or attic space. There are different grants that the homeowner can apply to that help cover these costs.

4. Programmable Thermostat - If you are looking to have the temperature change depending on when you are home during the day, or are sleeping, we always recommend a programmable thermostat. They are cost effective and can simply help lower your heating fuel costs. We don’t recommend a drastic change in temperature throughout the day, as often this can have a counter effect on your furnace’s work load. Having the home a few degrees lower while at work can help save money off your next fuel bill.
